About the role

City of Canada Bay council is proud to offer a Cadetship within our Health Building & Compliance Team, in line with the “fresh start for local government apprentices, trainees and cadets” in conjunction with the NSW Government. This cadetship offers a combination of on-the-job work experience whilst you complete your university degree in this field.

The role offers hands-on learning and training opportunities for students enrolled in an appropriate undergraduate degree in Building Surveying or equivalent, as we invest in the future of our staff, ensuring they have rewarding careers and the skills and experience necessary to deliver high-quality services to our community.

As a Building Surveyor Cadet you will:

  • Assist the Coordinator Building and Compliance in monitoring development and implementing best practice to ensure all necessary building, fire, compliance and construction functions are undertaken
  • Provide advice to the public, other Council staff, developers and public bodies on land use, building, fire safety, and other development matters as required
  • Complete duties and responsibilities in accordance with the policies, guidelines, and regulations applicable to the team's functions.
  • Provide progress reports/advice relating to key issues currently under investigation/assessment to the Coordinator Building and Compliance on a regular basis
  • Prepare assessment reports and determinations within target times in accordance with the policies, guidelines, and regulations of the unit’s function.

About the person 

To be successful in this role, you will:  

  • Be enrolled in an undergraduate or post graduate degree in Construction Management or Advanced Diploma of Building Surveying or equivalent, that facilitates a pathway to becoming a registered certifier under the Building and Development Certifiers Act 2018 & NSW Fair Trading and in your final or second-last year of your degree
  • Have well-developed skills in research, analysis and preparation of high-quality policies and documents and reports
  • Show a willingness to learn and contribute positively to a team environment
  • Hold a current Class C NSW Drivers Licence
