About the Position

City of Canada Bay Council is seeking a passionate, innovative and experienced Team Leader Bushcare to join the Urban Forest & Ecology team in the Open Space department. This role plays a key part in the overall management and maintenance of Council's natural areas, open spaces and bushcare sites - caring for Country whilst providing meaningful and inspiring bushcare volunteer supervision.

 

Key Accountabilities:

  • Supervise and train volunteer Bushcare groups on weekdays and weekends.
  • Lead the Bushcare team, managing and maintaining Council's natural areas (including bushcare sites). Oversee bush regeneration contractors, ensuring they meet contract specifications and schedules. Operate minor plant equipment and maintain access tracks.
  • Technical Advice & Customer Service: Provide expert advice to customers, the Urban Forest & Ecology Team, and stakeholders. Efficiently respond to service requests related to pest, weed, natural area, bushcare, and fauna matters.
  • Community & Stakeholder Engagement: Participate in educational programs on bushland, biodiversity, and sustainability. Promote community involvement through events like National Tree Day.
  • Resource Coordination: Manage resources for the Bushcare Team, including contractors, materials, and equipment. Ensure accurate documentation and reporting.
  • Grant Management: Identify, apply for, and manage grant funding for natural areas and bushcare projects.
  • Site Assessments & Work Plans: Conduct site assessments, develop work plans, and create vegetation management plans to support biodiversity and habitat objectives.
  • Compliance & Policy Input: Ensure compliance with relevant legislation and contribute to policy and strategic planning and development. Investigate unauthorised tree works such as Mangrove vandalism and apply for necessary licences and permits.

Essential Requirements:

    • Relevant tertiary qualifications such as Diploma in Ecology and Land Management or equivalent and/or degree in ecology/environmental science.
    • Current ‘C Class’ drivers licence.
    • Current Construction Induction Card (Whitecard).
    • Chemcert III Certificate.
    • Valid Working with Children Check
    • Minimum 3 years’ experience working in a bush regeneration Supervisor Team Leader role, leading and managing a team or a minimum 4 years’ experience working in a bush regeneration role with demonstrated knowledge of bushland maintenance practices, combined with demonstrated experience acting in a leadership role.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills with a demonstrated strong customer focus.
    • Highly developed written and oral communication skills, including report writing and ability to engage with people of all levels.
    • Ability to work in a self-directed manner, effectively lead a team and work within set timeframes.
    • Comprehensive computer skills with the ability to maintain accurate records, use Council programs including TechOne and Cia, communicate effectively with stakeholders in accordance with Councils procedures.
